BOX OFFICE SHOWDOWN – JULY 9-12 – MAGIC MIKE GRINDS UP ON AUDIENCES

Every week we dissect the good, the bad, and the bombs of the Aussie box office world. No talk of box office would be complete without mention of the US, so we’ll also take a look at what’s hitting big, what’s not, and where our refined Aussie movie palates differ from our blockbuster loving American brethren (Hot tip – probably not all that much). Let’s dig in…

Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello were in the country this past week as part of a media blitz to drum up interest in the sequel. As if Australian women needed another reason to go see this…

No matter the sweat they poured into their performance, the hunks of Magic Mike XXL couldn’t grind their way past a couple of animated holdovers. Coming in just behind the tiny yellow guys, the boys scored a respectable $4.1 million in 3rd place. Any other weekend, that would probably mean the top spot, but during the last week of school holidays they were just overwhelmed.

After three weeks of playing second runner up to Jurassic World and Minions, the emotional Pixar creations of Inside Out have risen to the top spot. Only $126,000 separates Joy and her friends from the cuddly henchmen, but they were able to hold them off to take the weekend crown. This all pushes last weeks champ, Terminator: Genisys, down to the fourth spot with a touch over $2.8 million. Arnie’s back, but maybe not for very long it seems.

Across the pond, the Minions finally took over. How’d they do?

Turns out, everyone loves those little guys! Like they have everywhere, the Minions took hold in a big way, raking in the cash and racking up the 2nd best animated debut of all time (behind Shrek The Third’s $121.6 million). Universal and Illumination Entertainment will be doing a massive happy dance at this result, which pushes Universal to over $3 billion in worldwide grosses this year and breaks a slew of company and industry records. In 5th place, was Warner Bros latest horror entry The Gallows, which didn’t scare up the same level audience that something like and Insidious or Paranormal Activity could. Rounding out the new wide releases this week was the Ryan Reynolds/Ben Kingsley two-handed Self/Less, which fizzled in 8th place with a measly $5.3 million. Probably not the result that they were after, but maybe the best they could have hoped for (see our verdict here).

Up next week, multiplexes will be heaving as no less than four new entries compete for your hard earned dollars. Paul Rudd dons the superhero guise of Ant-Man, horror fans get a dose of Insidious: Chapter 3, John Green fans get another adaptation in the form of Paper Towns, and a local movie get it’s chance to shine as Brendan Cowell’s drama Reuben Guthrie hit screens.

So there you go folks, any surprises? Everything pan out just as you suspected? Hit us up in the comments and let us know what you’re enjoying at the multiplex. Also, if there’s anything you’d like to see us cover in the world of box office, speak up and let your opinion be known!
