In news that should come as no surprise to even the most casual comic book movie fan, Warner Bros. have finally confirmed that a solo Batman film is indeed in the works for DC, starring and directed by their new caped crusader, Ben Affleck.
The announcement was made by the CEO of Warner Bros. as part of the recent CinemaCon event which was held in Las Vegas (more on that here), and is just one of ten planned DC films to be released between now and 2020. Talk about flying before you can crawl guys, geeeez.
Its safe to say that most of the movie going public are still on the fence about DC’s cinematic universe, and there’s also the rather large shadow of a certain other Batman trilogy hanging over project, made worse by the fact Nolan’s beloved films are still so fresh in the public’s memory.
Personally, I think Batfleck was the best thing about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and we know the actor is a comic book fan from way back, so I’m intrigued to see what new directions he takes the saga. We know Affleck himself has written a script for the film, so it will be interesting to see whether Warners trusts him enough to bring this idea to life.
Despite the immense pressure on the actor/director to not fuck up the continuing story of arguably the world’s most popular comic book character, you’d be hard pressed to think of someone more prepared for potential backlash than the guy who survived Daredevil, Gigli, and the now infamous “Sad Affleck” press tour for Dawn of Justice.
DC’S SOLO BATMAN FILM is tentatively slated for release in either 2018 or 2019
